Mikel Oyarzabal gave Spain the lead from the penalty spot before Pedro Porro sealed the win with a second-half strike, as Luis de la Fuente’s side dominated proceedings through a superb midfield display. Spain will now face either Argentina or England in Sunday’s final in New Jersey.
The result also brought an end to one of the World Cup’s most remarkable statistical streaks. Since the 1982 World Cup final, every tournament decider had featured at least one player from both Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. Spain’s squad contains no players from either club, making it impossible for the streak to continue in the 2026 final.
While either Bayern’s Harry Kane or Inter’s Lautaro Martinez will still feature in the final depending on the outcome of the Argentina-England semi-final, the long-running record of both clubs being represented in every World Cup final has officially come to an end after 44 years.
